Capel Pentwyn, Penallt
A late Victorian chapel in the Arts & Crafts
style. Converted in 2005 to a luxury 3-bedroom self-catering
holiday house that sleeps 5, given 5 Star grading by Visit Wales.
Built in 1869 at the height of the Arts and Crafts period it
has been converted by local architects to reflect the style of
that period. Externally, little has been changed except for a
simple garden and a large terrace giving panoramic views over
the valley and to the nearby Forest of Dean. For a larger group,
you can rent the adjacent Old School that used to be attached
to the chapel.
Ros personally greets all guests on arrival and explains
where everything is and how it works and provides advice on local
amenities. There are fresh flowers and a welcoming pot of tea and
biscuits to help you get settled in and we can provide a luxury
breakfast hamper if you have a late arrival.
Internally, an entrance
lobby soars to the high rafters and a gallery from the first floor
overlooks the entrance. The apse, with wonderful stained glass
windows forms an elegant dining room with the original Victorian
tiles reset in an oak floor that covers the whole ground area.
The large lounge area has oriental rugs and period tapestries and
an antique woodburning stove of the period imported from Norway
and resting on a hearth created by a local sculptor from Forest
of Dean stone.
The open plan oak kitchen although traditional in style has all
the necessities of luxury living as do the bedrooms and bathrooms.
TVs and telephones are in every room and a fully equipped utility
room is there for those who need to do a bit of washing and ironing.
It is really comfortable accommodation for 5 people
The building has been designed with attention to the needs of
those who may have disabilities and there is a downstairs single
study bedroom and a 'wheel-in' shower and bathroom. The whole ground
floor and garden is wheelchair friendly.
As with the Old School, we are keen to maintain our 'Green' credentials
and have been very careful to ensure that we meet the highest environmental
standards both inside and out.
There is a garden with hard standing for 3 cars, but for those
who want to put their car under cover or a lockup for their cycles;
there is access to these in the adjoining Old School property.
As with the Old School all facilities are provided within the
price except for telecoms, food and drink.
